Thirty-six year old woman requires lifelong 24-hour care and ongoing therapeutic interventions due to Chicagoland hospital and doctors’ failure to timely diagnose and treat stroke.

A settlement of $11 million was obtained for a Dupage County single working mother of two boys, ages 17 and 15, due to the failure of Chicagoland hospital and doctors to diagnose and treat stroke. The 36 year old Plaintiff was transported by ambulance on April 20, 2016 to the Chicagoland hospital within 30 minutes of stroke onset.

Despite stroke being in the differential diagnosis, the Plaintiff’s stroke went undiagnosed and untreated for 9 hours, depriving her of timely treatment with tPA and/or thrombectomy. The negligence included the failure to initiate the hospital stroke protocol and the failure to identify a hyperdense middle cerebral artery demonstrated on the head CT.

The Plaintiff suffers from permanent cognitive, psychological, and physical injuries, including severe aphasia and right-sided hemiplegia. Plaintiff has undergone treatment and surgical procedures at numerous hospitals and rehabilitation facilities. Plaintiff has been diagnosed and treated in the following ways: global aphasia, right sided hemiplegia; right extremity pain; severe cognitive injury and a complete inability to participate in normal activities of daily life; dysphagia; depression; neurologic pain; hemiplegia with ataxia; high risk fall; migraine headaches; anxiety; right side facial droop; hyperesthesias and pain in the left temporal region and also preauricular region; shoulder subluxation on the right side; deep venous thrombosis in the common femoral vein and superficial femoral and popliteal vein; wrist drop and foot drop on the right side. Plaintiff will require 24-hour care and ongoing therapeutic interventions for the rest of her life.
